Late Fee
A penalty charged for paying past the due date
A late fee is the penalty charged when you fail to repay a card balance or loan by the due date. It is usually not a separate flat charge but a penalty rate applied on top of your original interest rate.
The burden grows because the rate jumps. Money borrowed at 5% can carry a far higher rate once it goes delinquent, and if the delinquency drags on, the lender can call the entire loan due, applying penalty interest to the whole principal rather than just the missed installment. At that point the amount owed can appear to multiply overnight.
Worse than the money is the record left on your credit. Even a short delinquency drags down your score, which then worsens the limits and rates on every loan you seek afterward. People really do lose years of favorable terms over a missed payment of a few dollars.
The fix is simple. Set up autopay and align the due date just after payday, and most accidental delinquencies disappear. If repayment is genuinely difficult, calling the lender before you miss the date to discuss rescheduling or restructuring is far better than letting it lapse.
