Gig Economy

A labor market built on short-term, on-demand work

The gig economy describes work taken and paid for job by job rather than through permanent employment — delivery, ride-hailing and freelance platform work are typical.

The appeal is controlling your own hours and workload. It allows income beyond a main job, or combining several kinds of work on a schedule you set.

In exchange, income is unstable and the safety net is thin. There is no paid leave or severance, illness stops earnings immediately, and insurance an employer once covered becomes your own cost.

Financial management matters far more. Uneven income calls for a thicker emergency fund, and tax not set aside in advance arrives as a single large bill later.

Arranging your own pension and health cover is essential. With the employer's handling gone, the habit of automatically setting aside a fixed share of each payment becomes necessary. Keeping records matters when income arrives from several places. Without documentation, proving income later puts you at a disadvantage for loans and tenancy agreements.
